Jun 02, 2008 - 12:54 PM
HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - June 2, 2008) - Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) has received an Environmental Excellence in Business award from Dalhousie University's Eco-Efficiency Centre for championing green practices at its Halifax, Nova Scotia manufacturing facility. Pratt & Whitney Canada is a United Technologies (NYSE:UTX) company.
The award was presented during the Centre's 9th Annual Environmental Excellence in Business Breakfast today and coinciding with Canadian Environment Week. The event recognizes Nova Scotia companies working on economic and environmental improvements through innovative thinking and proactive strategies to reduce their ecological footprint.
"We are honoured to be recognized for our ongoing commitment to protect the environment," said Marc Paquet, Halifax Plant Manager, P&WC. "This award is a tribute to all our employees in Halifax, who are dedicated to conserving water, reducing energy use and preserving our natural resources in our day-to-day operations."
P&WC's Halifax plant, which specializes in the sub-assembly of engine components, precision machining of turbine blades, and complex engine castings, was recognized for a number of green initiatives.
- The plant has reduced its consumption of potable water by the equivalent of 168,000 gallons per year by removing silicates from water used in a chemical process tank, extending its life expectancy.
- Several large air conditioning units have been converted to a non-ozone depleting product, reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 30 metric tons a year and energy usage by 15%.
- The replacement of solvent-based cleaning processes with an innovative water-based cleaner developed by P&WC has reduced overall process air emissions by over 70% in one year.
Dalhousie University's Eco-Efficiency Centre, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, works with partners to build a competitive economy that is sustainable for future generations. It promotes responsible stewardship of resources, ecologically inspired design of products and processes, technologies that are ecologically and economically efficient and solutions that are innovative and environmentally adaptable.
